3rd kyu (brown belt) Exam

General points the examiner looks for:

  1. Body connection in kicking-punching combinations.
  2. Can apply basic techniques from free style position with correct timing and distance.
  3. Center point is controlled.
  4. Body movement and technique for correct and effective application.
  5. Correct body movement (down center line) when attacking or blocking.
  6. Good use of body rotation.
  7. Increased speed.
  8. Smooth transition from technique to technique.
  9. Understanding of speed variation and body rhythm.

Kata:

Tekki Shodan (Horse Riding #1)

Kihon:

Each series of 3 should be executed without stopping between techniques.

  1. Stepping in, 3 lunge punches; face, stomach, face.
  2. Stepping back, rising block, front leg front kick, reverse punch.
  3. Stepping in, knife hand block, front-leg front kick, reverse spear hand.
  4. Stepping back, outside block, elbow strike, back-fist strike.
  5. Stepping in, front leg front kick, back leg front kick, stomach, then face.
  6. Stepping in, front leg round kick, back leg round kick, stomach, then face.
  7. Stepping across, side snap kick, highest level. Turn and repeat.
  8. Stepping across, side thrust kick, highest level. Turn and repeat.
  9. Stepping across, back thrust kick, stomach. Turn and repeat.
  10. Stepping in, front thrust kick, knee. Turn and repeat.
  11. Stepping in, back leg front kick, back leg round kick, reverse punch.
  12. Stepping in, front leg front kick, back leg side thrust kick, reverse punch.
  13. Stepping in, lunge punch face, lunge punch stomach, lunch punch stomach.
  14. Facing, back leg front kick, with same leg, side snap or side thrust kick.

Kumite (1 step):

Attacker executes each technique once, switching sides between techniques (first left leg leads, then right leg leads).

  1. Attacker: Stepping in, lunge punch, face level; Defender: Block and counter, any technique.
  2. Attacker: Stepping in, lunge punch, stomach level; Defender: Block and counter, any technique.
  3. Attacker: Stepping in, back leg front kick, stomach level; Defender: Block and counter, any technique.
  4. Attacker: Stepping in, back leg round kick, stomach level; Defender: Block and counter, any technique.
  5. Attacker: Stepping in, side thrust kick, stomach level; Defender: Block and counter, any technique.
  6. Ju Ippon (one step fake attack or technique)
